Community English Classes

(Fáilte Isteach Model)

What will happen

Community English classes provide a welcoming space where newcomers can improve their English language skills, build confidence and make connections within their local community.

Inspired by the Fáilte Isteach model, classes are delivered by local volunteers in a relaxed and supportive environment. The focus is on practical conversation and everyday communication rather than formal examinations. Alongside language learning, participants often gain valuable information about local services, activities and community life.

Who is involved:

  • Local volunteers

  • Community organisations

  • Newcomers and migrants

  • Libraries, community centres or other venue hosts

What are the steps in making it happen:

  1. Identify a suitable venue.

  2. Recruit volunteer tutors.

  3. Arrange any training required.

  4. Agree class times and schedule.

  5. Gather learning materials.

  6. Promote the classes through community networks and local services.

  7. Welcome participants and begin classes.

Inclusion Tip

Create a relaxed atmosphere where people feel comfortable making mistakes and practising their English. Consider child-friendly spaces, transport options and translated promotional materials.

What resources are needed:

  • Venue or meeting space

  • Volunteer tutors

  • Basic teaching materials

  • Tea and coffee (optional)

  • Promotional materials

What are the logistics in getting it off the ground:

Coffee mornings can be organised as a one-off event or, ideally, as a regular gathering such as monthly or fortnightly. Once a venue and organising team are in place, the main focus should be on outreach and promotion to ensure a diverse mix of participants.

How should success be measured for this action:

  • Start with a small team of volunteers and a regular location.

  • Consistency is important, so participants know when and where classes will take place.

Use the first few weeks to gather feedback and adapt the format based on participants' needs.

How should success be measured for this action?

  • Attendance and retention

  • Participant confidence in using English

  • Number of volunteers involved

  • Participant feedback

  • New community connections formed
