Community Coffee Morning

What will happen

A community coffee morning is a simple but effective way to bring people together in a welcoming and informal setting. Whether hosted in a library, community hall, café, parish centre, a local market or other local venue, it provides an opportunity for neighbours to meet, connect and build relationships.

Everyone is welcome, including long-term residents, newcomers, people living alone, families and anyone interested in getting more involved in community life. Some gatherings may also include guest speakers, local information sessions or themed discussions.

Who is involved:

  • Community members of all ages and backgrounds

  • Local volunteers

  • Community groups or organisations

  • Guest speakers (optional)

  • Venue hosts

What are the steps in making it happen:

  1. Identify volunteers to coordinate and promote the event.

  2. Secure a suitable venue that is welcoming and accessible.

  3. Set a regular date and time.

  4. Promote the event widely through local networks, social media, noticeboards and community newsletters.

  5. Prepare refreshments.

  6. Consider inviting guest speakers or local organisations to share information and services.

Inclusion Tip

Think about timing, transport, childcare and accessibility. Consider how newcomers and people who are less connected will hear about the event. Where possible, translate invitations and promotional materials into languages spoken locally.

What resources are needed:

  • Venue

  • Tea, coffee and refreshments

  • Volunteers

  • Promotional materials

  • Tables and seating

What are the logistics in getting it off the ground:

Coffee mornings can be organised as a one-off event or, ideally, as a regular gathering such as monthly or fortnightly. Once a venue and organising team are in place, the main focus should be on outreach and promotion to ensure a diverse mix of participants.

How should success be measured for this action:

  • Number of attendees

  • Diversity of participants

  • Repeat attendance

  • Feedback from participants

  • New friendships, connections or community activities that develop as a result
